'Ghostbusters' release date finally confirmed for PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii

While the release date of the highly anticipated Ghostbusters videogame has been hovering over June 16th for some time, it was only today that we received official confirmation that the mid-June date is, indeed, when the game will arrive in the US (followed three days later in Europe).

This confirmation is great news for a title that has hit many a bump in the road, including copyright and publishing issues. We're pleased as punch that copyright cleared and Atari was able to grab the game so it will be able to be released it alongside the Ghostbusters 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray DVD.

The Ghostbusters videogame was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, some say in lieu of a third film. The original cast, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, will be starring in the title.

Max Payne and Max Payne 2 now available on Xbox originals

If you missed the first two Max Payne titles from Rockstar, then you've missed a part of gaming history. The original title, one of the first to incorporate "bullet-time" into gameplay, set the standard for first-person shooters on the last generation of consoles (Xbox, PS2, Gamecube). Not only was the gameplay new and fresh, but the use of noir storytelling devices earned critical acclaim.

Now you can download both Max Payne titles to your Xbox 360 for $15 a pop. Not a bad option for those trying to reel in spending but want a great gaming experience, nor those who want a Max Payne refresher before Max Payne 3 arrives this winter.

Harry Potter movie delay to hurt EA -- or is it?

A couple weeks ago we all received the tragic news that the sixth installment of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was being pushed back in the movie theaters from Holiday '08 to Summer '09. At the time, we didn't know what that would mean for EA's videogame, slated to be released alongside the movie (although we had our suspicions).

Yesterday we received confirmation that the game would also be pushed back to Summer '09. Today, we hear that this move will cut out $120 million from EA's projected revenue for the current fiscal year.

Ouch...right? Well, it sounds worse than it is. EA is certainly going to survive this hit, as it barely put a dent in the $4.9 billion the company is expected to bring in this year (and, yes, that number reflects the $120 million loss).

Can you believe videogames are now such a huge industry that a company like EA can simply brush off a $120 million loss? These publishers are now solidly working with billions of dollars. BILLIONS. And we spend how much on videogames? I think these people are in cahoots with the oil industry. I really do.

'Ghostbusters' gets slimed

As a child of the '80s, I've been looking forward to a decent Ghostbusters videogame for over two decades. This October, my dreams were supposed to come true. A game, complete with voice acting from the original cast, was to be delivered. We even got this fun new trailer from E3:

Great, right? Well, it ends up that things aren't so great. As of this past weekend, videogame retailer Gamestop has stopped offering pre-orders on the game, which is supposed to be less than two months away. What's worse, they're offering refunds to those who have already pre-ordered. Refunds? Gamestop? Dogs and cats, living together...MASS HYSTERIA!

We'll let you know when there is further news on this travesty.

'Metal Gear Solid 4' goes gold

With the worldwide release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots one month away, Konami held a press conference yesterday to announce that development of the game is complete, the master copy (gold) has been made, and the game is ready for mass production. BooYa!

In addition to the announcement yesterday, Konami showed five commercials, each based on the Metal Gear Solid world. Rumor has it you can view said commercials at the MGS4 official site...I wouldn't know, though, as it's taken 20 minutes to get the site half loaded. Hmmm.

'Mercenaries 2', 'Saints Row 2' get release dates

After several delays, Pandemic Studios finally seems confident in providing a solid release date for the highly anticipated Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, as they stuck it at the end of a brand new trailer.

Look to guide your soldiers-for-hire through the jungles of South America on August 31st (Septermber 5th in the UK). These dates apply for all console (PS2,PS3, X360) and PC versions of the game.

Official Mercs 2 site w/ trailer

On the heels of Pandemic's announcement came one from THQ, letting gamers know there will be another sandbox title to choose from, just days before the release of Mercs 2 (and just a few months after GTA IV. Look for Saints Row 2 (PS3, X360) to hit store shelves on August 26th. Oy.

Truth be told, the past couple of Saints trailers make me wonder if they're really going to be ready for an August release...as one is all audio, the other, a 15 second slide show. Lame.

'Bourne' coming June 3

Let's move past the fact that The Bourne Conspiracy videogame will not feature Matt Damon and is based on Robert Ludlum's novels instead of the films. You past it? OK. Me too.

With that ugliness behind us, we can now all celebrate the announcement from Sierra Entertainment (via Vivendi) that the game will land in North America on June 3rd and in the UK on June 27th. So, get your PS3s and Xbox 360s ready, as Jason Bourne is about to take control!

'Metal Gear Solid 4' gets June 12th release date

It looks like June is the month to get your stealth on!

After a week of MGS4 release date rumors and a "late second quarter" promise by Konami, the company buckled and confirmed an official release date of June 12, 2008.

What's more, those who pre-order the next Solid Snake adventure will receive a "pre-order package" which will provide you access to the Metal Gear Online beta when it goes live in April, along with a bonus DVD titled Metal Gear Saga 2.0.

In case you are still sans a PS3 on that ever important June 12th date, Sony revealed this week a Metal Gear Solid PS3 bundle, which will include MGS4, an 80G PS3, and the soon-to-be-released Dual Shock 3 controller, all for US$499.

'Metal Gear Solid 4' delayed until '08

While no big game in recent history has made the first couple of release dates that are announced by the developers, it doesn't make the news of a delay hurt any less. It is for this reason that I share with you the following e-mail from Gamestop and EB to customers who pre-ordered the title with a heavy heart:

Dear Customer,

You have signed up to receive release date changes for:

Thank you for visiting EBgames.com!

NOTE: The product release date is the best estimate as to when the product will become available. These dates are subject to change at anytime. EBGames.com is in constant communication with product vendors to provide you with the most accurate release dates possible.

Since most people I know say the only game that makes them even consider purchasing a PS3 is MGS4, and because MGS4 was supposed to compete with several X360 holiday releases, this serves as more bad news for Sony. However, no one wants a game like MGS4 to be released before it's ready, as that would be even worse news for Sony.

Personally, the sting hurts me because I see this 3/1/2008 date and I see Holiday 2008. I guess we'll see.
