Introduction and Kokiri Forest

In the first movie, you are introduced to NAVI, your very own Fairy, who, go figure, is your NAVIgator. When/if you get stuck, talk to NAVI or pay attention to where she is going toward/hovering over. She might have some helpful hints.

You start off in your tree home. Go down the ladder and take some time exploring, talking to people, and getting used to the controls.

Navi will tell you that the Great Deku Tree beckons. The Deku Tree is the Eastern half of the map. To get there, head toward the East path on your map. You'll run into MIDO. He tells you that you can't see the Deku Tree without a shield and a sword. So, you have to get a shield and a sword.

KOKIRI SWORD - Head to the "Forest Training Center" at the Southern end of the map. Go up the dirt ramp to reach it. Go through it and you'll find a guy to talk. He's here to explain some controls to you. Listen and learn. Go through the ground tunnel (you have to hit "A" to "Enter") and work your way around the path/maze until you get to the Treasure Chest...it's a side path off the boulder's path. You have found the KOKIRI SWORD! Go into your menu ("Start" button) and "select" the sword to equip it.

DEKU SHIELD - Collect 40 Rupees in the village by chopping things, picking jars up and breaking them, throwing rocks, etc. Then, go to the Kokiri Shop in the Northeast. It has a red outlined roof. Go in, talk to the guy, and buy a shield. You have the DEKU SHIELD! To use it, push the "R" button. Go to your menu to equip your shield.

Now, head back to the Eastern pathway, and talk to MIDO again. He'll let you through. Go downt the path. You'll run into your first Deku Babas. Slash them and you'll get a DEKU STICK. Handy for lighting things on fire, and, defense when you don't have a sword. Equip your DEKU STICK in the "Start" menu and assign it to one of your "C" Stick directions. Soon, you'll reach the DEKU TREE. You need to break the curse on the DEKU TREE. His mouth opens, enter.

Now, time to face your first dungeon.
