FAQs

General FAQs
Q. How many Shines are there per level?
A. There are 11 Shine Sprites in every world. One is collected when you've completed your goal in each of the 8 "Episodes", one is collected when you collect 100 coins, and there are two "Secret Shines" per level. The exception to this rule is Isle Delfino, where 19 Shine Sprites can be located.
Q. How many Blue Coins are there per level?
A. Thirty, although Isle Delfino only has 20 and Corona Mountain (where you encounter the final boss) has 10.
Q. When do I get to play with Yoshi?
A. You get to begin using Yoshi once you complete the 4th Episode in Pinna Park.
Q. When do the nozzle attachments become available for me to use?
A. The rocket nozzle opens up when you collect 25 Shines, and the propeller nozzle opens up once you have 30 Shines.

Bianco Hills
Episode 5: Down with Petey Piranha!
Your goal is to get over to the sleeping plant and attack him. Try using your rocket pack to blast up to the area, or work your way up with buildings and bouncing lines. Once up there, go to the area where the gate looks broken and get one of those bouncing puff balls on your nozzle. Aim at the Piranha Plant. One hit will wake him up. Now the battle begins. Shoot him in the air until he comes down. He'll try some attacks on you, followed by a jaw opening moment. Spray water in his mouth during these times. He will fall over. Ground pound him. Three successful ground pounds will do the job.
Episode 6: The Secret of the Dirty Lake
Just keep in mind that you can walk your way around rotating blocks. There's no need to jump on them.
100 Coins
The best level to collect 100 Coins in is Level 8. The lake is no longer poisoned, and there are a lot of enemies to kill.
Secret Shine #1
After clearing Episode 3, return to the level and the cave. Hit the red button and get ready for a timed red coin challenge.
Secret Shine #2
After clearing Episode 6, return to the level and the cave. Hit the red button and get ready for another timed red coin challenge. Don't pick up the propeller, as you want your normal jet pack to hover through the level.

Ricco Harbor
Episode 1: Gooper Blooper Break Out
Get used to doing this as you will have to beat this guy several times during the game. It's simple, really. When his tentacles are down, grab one with "B" and pull it off his body. Continue doing this with the other tentacles until he's left with nothing. Then, go for his mouth. Repeat.
Episode 3: The Caged Shine Sprite
There's really no secret here. It just takes patience. Work your way around the structure. By the rocket pack, there is a trampoline. Use it. It will take you to more trampolines. Eventually you'll tramp into the cage.
Episode 8: Yoshi's Fruit Adventure
Many people get stuck here because they haven't unlocked Yoshi yet. You have to unlock Yosh in Delfino Plaza before you can use him here (and you do that once you accomplish the 4th Episode in Pinna Park). Once you have access to Yosh, get the right fruit for him by ground pounding the fruit machine. Take it to the Yoshi egg. With Yoshi head over to the area where you see fish jumping. Spray them with Yoshi juice, and they will turn into platforms. That's really all the mystery there is about this part.
100 Coins
The best level to collect 100 Coins in is Episode 6 or 8. Take noted of coins in the water, in the underground tunnels, and on the crane structures.
Secret Shine #1
After clearing Episode 2, return to the level, and complete your lap in under 40 seconds.
Secret Shine #2
After clearing Episode 4, return to the level and the obstacle course. Hit the red button and get ready for another timed red coin challenge.

Gelato Beach
Episode 1: Dune Bud Sand Caslte Secret
In the opening cut scene you're shown a plant. Water it. This will create a sand castle which, upon entering, will lead you to an obstacle course.
Episode 2: Mirror Madness! Tilt, Slam, Bam!
Hose down those rotten bastards on the mirrors until they are off balance. Run to the opposite side of the mirror and ground pound it. Watch them fly off the precious mirrors.
Episode 3: Wiggler Ahoy! Full Steam Ahead!
When the big caterpiller approaches, water one of the crazy plants. What rises from the sand will knock the caterpiller over (if timed correctly). Get on the caterpiller when he's knocked over and ground pound the section of him that the arrow is pointing to. Three perfectly placed pounds should get rid of him.
Episode 4: The Sand Bird is Born
Ahh, yes. The seven red coins are easy to find, but where is the eighth, you ask? Number 8 is located on the top of the pillar the sand bird is circling. We recommend staying near the neck or tail area, so when the bird turns on his climb, you can use this midline to (semi) easily get to a side (of the neck or tail) so you don't fall off.
Episode 8: The Watermelon Festival
Just a tip: The watermelon you need is at the top of the hill, where the race with Il Piantissimo ended. There really are no tricks with this one. Just be careful with your precious melon.
100 Coins
The best level to collect 100 Coins in is Episode 8. Pound the flippers on the beach for coins. Repeatedly destroy watermelons for coins. Take the two smaller watermelons to the cabana for your reward (don't take the biggest one, as it will finish the level). Get remaining coins in tree tops and on the giant swing.
Secret Shine #1
After clearing Episode 1, return to the level and the obstacle course. Hit the red button and collect all 8 red coins.
Secret Shine #2
Locate the Dune Bud on the third tier which creates a staircase going down leading to four coins. Spray the back wall and reveal the Shine.

Pinna Park
Episode 2: The Beach Cannon's Secret
Your goal here is to toast the Gopher Gunner. To do so, approach him so he is tossing bombs at you instead of stooting bullets. When he does, spray the bombs so they turn blue. When blue, pick up a bomb and toss it at the Gopher. An obstacle course will open up for you.
Episode 5: The Runaway Ferris Wheel
In order to knock off the rascal sitting on the ferris wheel switch, you need to maneuver your way up the grates behind the ferris wheel.
Episode 6: The Yoshi-Go-Round's Secret
Go find the Yoshi egg. The egg needs to be asking for a pineapple or the pear looking fruit for Yoshi to turn the orange color you need (If he's asking for another fruit, simply exit the level then re-enter until he's asking for the right one). Once you get Orange Yoshi, ride him down to the Merry-Go-Round and up to the section that is missing an Orange Yoshi. An obstacle course will open up for you.
100 Coins
The best level to collect 100 Coins in is Episode 2 or 6. In Episode 2, simply spray the bullets coming at you until you have enough coins. In Episode 6 spray the beach, stomp on bugs, and allow Yoshi to chomp some butterflies.
Secret Shine #1
After clearing Episode 2, return to the level and the obstacle course. Hit the red button and collect all 8 red coins.
Secret Shine #2
After clearing Episode 6, return to the level and the obstacle course. Hit the red button and collect all 8 red coins.

Sirena Beach
Episode 1: The Manta Storm
Fighting the Manta Boss isn't horribly difficult, but it is slightly time consuming. I suggest getting in the hover mode, and spraying the Manta for all he's worth. This will split him time and time again. When you have split him to small enough parts, those parts will flee into the ocean harmlessly (for now). Once you've blasted the Manta into as many parts as you possibly can, the guys in the ocean will turn red and come after you. Blasting them again will get rid of them for good. I suggest doing your work in and around one of the two fountains. This way, you have a constant suppy of water, and several coins near by. If you don't like this location, the beach works nicely, as well.
Episode 3: Mysterious Hotel Delfino
This one is a doozie. Your goal here is to get the Shine in the pool spa area, but you need Yoshi to get you there. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but Yoshi is asking for a pineapple. Stupid pineapple. So, to get the pineapple, here's what you need to do:
1) Enter the Mens' Bathroom and jump up to the leaking ceiling in the back corner. You will enter the room above you.

2) In this room, spray the painting until you reveal a Boo to enter the next room.
3) This is the twins' room. Spray the four wood panels to reaveal another Boo.
4) From here, spray the pink Boos so they turn into platforms which allow you to pop through the ceiling.
5) On the third floor now, spray the book shelf so it flips and you can walk under it to the next room.
6) In this room, you may want to spray the Boo Poster to go across to the next room, but, what you really need to do is ground pound the out of place looking tile so you're sent down to the room below.
7) Finally, you are in a room with a big Boo (don't worry about him) and several crates. Smash the crates until you find the pineapple. Exit out the door and take the pineapple to Yoshi.

Now that you have Yoshi, you need to head up to the open door on the third floor. Bounce on the bed and enter the ceiling air duct area. Yoshi can eat Boos, so use him to clear the path to the large square area over the pool/spa. There is a star tile in this area. Ground pound it and you're in the pool. Thank God.
Episode 4: The Secret of Casino Delfino
Enter the Casino (the entrance is by the Yoshi egg). Spray the slot machines until they both read "777". This may take a while, and we suggest using short spurts of water. Eventually, the numbers will align for you. This will open up the rotating-Shine picture behind the curtain. Again, using laser like precision and short spurts of water, get the picture of the Shine to reveal itself. This opens up a not-to-difficult obstacle course.
Episode 5: King Boo Down Below
Back to the Casino with you. Ground pound the purple button to begin your fight with the Big Boo. Spray the slot machine. You're looking for three pineapples (otherwise, just protect yourself, there's nothing you can do to the Boo). Once you get three pineapples, Boo will spit some fruit out at you. Grab one of the two red chili peppers, and toss them at Boo. He will ignite. Grab any other piece of fruit (excluding the other chili pepper) and toss it at Boo. Three direct hits should do the job. This task is made easier by hitting the purple sections of the roulette wheel to make it stop spinning.
Episode 6: Scrubbing Sirena Beach
You have a short time to clean up a big mess. Here are some tips to help you do the job:
1) The Sprinkler Squirt maneuver cleans up a lot fast. Circle the control stick and press "R".
2) There are barrels around. Barrels are full of water. Toss the barrels in dirty sections to clean massive areas.
3) Hold the "R" button half way in to run and clean at the same time.
4) You don't have to clean every last inch. They are fairly forgiving in your clean up this time.
100 Coins
The best level to collect 100 Coins in is Episode 4. Before entering the hotel, make you you collect the 10 coins outside.
Secret Shine #1
After clearing Episode 2, return to the level and the obstacle course. Hit the red button and collect all 8 red coins.
Secret Shine #2
After clearing Episode 4, return to the level and the obstacle course. Hit the red button and collect all 8 red coins.

Noki Bay
Episode 2: The Boss of Tricky Ruins
Cross the water platforms to the hacking Grandpa. There is a brown tile above him. Spray it. You can now wall jump your way up the shaft, and get over to another safe spot before the indented area goes back to normal. You will need to spray another brown tile near the baby squids attacking you. Find your way to the top of that in time, and you will be faced with a giant squid battle. You know how to beat him. He's a little tougher now, wo spray his face occasionally to slow him down.
Episode 6: The Shell's Secret
OK. Up to the giant Conch Shell in the sky. This is fairly easily accessed by working your way up the beanstalks and making use of the bouncing tightropes. The real problems begin when you enter this uber-difficult obstacle course. Here are some tips:
1) On your second solid plank of wood, after the yellow and green spinning things, there are two nails sticking up. Ground pound the far one into the wood, and a 1-Up Mushroom will appear. You will need all the lives you can get your hands on for this one.
2) After this, you will have a series of walls on which you have to wall jump. This is as much luck as skill at this point, so just keep trying and hope that when you fall, you land on something solid. After that, the course is relatively straight forward.
100 Coins
The best level to collect 100 Coins in is Episode 8.
Secret Shine #1
After clearing Episode 6, return to the level and the obstacle course. Hit the red button and collect all 8 red coins.
Secret Shine #2
As you begin the level, in front of you and to the left is a beach area. Go there and look for the area of the wall that has a shaft you can wall jump leading to a tunnel. Get in the tunnel and work your way around. Jump up and enter the new tunnel above you. Upon entering, you will be shot up to a grassy look out area. Shoot the gold bird with your pack, and he will, eventually, turn into a Shine.

Pianta Village
Episode 1: Chain Chomplets Unchained
Your goal here is to toss the Chain Chomps into the water in the centerish part of the area. Keep this area clear of lava, you will need to be able to walk safely around. In order to get the Chain Chomps in the water you need to first, cool them off with your hose, then run behind them and grab their chains with "B". Pull back, aim at the water, and release. Get all three in the water to get the shine.
Episode 2: Il Piantissimo's Crazy Climp
This was the first real problem we had beating this guy. The key here is to belly slide...actually, it's more like slip and slide. Run forward while spraying water directly in front of you. Hit "A", the "B" to slide. The addition of the water you sprayed on the ground will put you far ahead. Hit "A" to stop sliding. One perfect slide is all you really need to get far enough ahead and beat the guy.
Episode 3: The Goopy Inferno
This level is pure rotten. No water pack and a lot of lava. There are two ways to access your pack. The first way, starting from the bridge, head left, then get on the rail that crosses a patch of lava. There's a hole to the underground grate system there. Use it, and work your way over to the sliding/hanging grate. Get on it, hit "B" to move it, when it stops, quickly hit "A" to fasten yourself to the grate above before the sliding grate falls. Enter the area above, and wall jump your way up to the above world. Carefully, work your way over the bridge, along the next raised platform. The opposite side of the platform is lava free. Make it there and, with everything you have, do a running jump over to the platforms leading up to your water pack and the mayor.

The other way involves getting Mario wet. Get over to the water. This takes a lot of time and patience, too. The water on Mario stays on him for a few seconds. You can clear a path to the platforms leading directly to the water pack and mayor by getting yourself wet then landing near lava...note near lava. Just work your way to the platform jumping in and out of water with a few precise "B" dives, and you should be OK. Either technique is tough. This is why, I suggest, when you finally reach the water pack, do some cleaning around the platform before you go for the mayor. Nothing is worse than getting your water pack, jumping for the Mayor, then falling into the lava and dying. Stop looking at me like that.

Or use this alternate method, submitted by schummi1@hotmail.com:
For this level, there is a very simple way to get to the mayor on the top of the mushroom...You simply need to go at the end of the bridge then turn left. then you need to walk on the small pipe over the lava. Right after it, you'll see the big tree to the left. You go up on the tree and go on the leaf that faces the mushroom where the mayor is. You just need to jumb towards it, then get your water pack and you have complete the episode in less then 2 minutes!
Episode 4: Chain Chomp's Bath
Your goal here is to get the Giant Chain Chomp into the pool of water the arrows are guiding you toward. My technique went like this: See the barrels of water near where he is nailed? Collect those and take the to the pool area. Set them there, then go release your Giant Chomp. The Chomp man goes on a rampage throughout the village. Just go to the pool area, grab a barrel, and wait for him. When he approaches then passes you (you want the chain directed at the pool), throw a barrel at him. It needs to be a good toss since you're throwing it from behind and it need to hit his face area. When he's hit, grab the chain and drag him into the pool area. Guide the chain toward the back of the pool. If you feel you are taking to long, quickly let go, grab one of your earlier placed barrels, and hit him again. Eventually, he will fall into the pool, and the Shine will be yours.
Episode 6: Piantas in Need
A fairly fun and easy stage. Just note that in one lava spill there are two islanders that need to be cleaned off, make sure you clean off all of the islanders until they sparkle, then, once you've released them all, talk to them (this part isn't necessary for a Shine, but you'll get several blue coins).
Episode 8: Fluff Festival Coin Hunt
To get the red coin on the gigantic palm tree: use the small palm tree in the now dried out stream to get onto the first platform of the large palm tree. Then, using some wall jumps and your Hover, you'll reach the point where you get the Rocket Nozzle. Next, get off the large palm tree and get up to the Golden Mushroom. Above you, use the cloud platforms to get to the top of the palm and get that damn Red Coin.

Here's the other Red Coin locations:
The one in the tree right after the bridge and to the right
The one under the massive pile of Boxes
The one in the fruit tree near the spring
The one in the spring
The one guared by bees near the spring
The one in the grass at the western side of town (assuming that you start off facing north)
The one underneath town, under where the brige connects with town

100 Coins
The best level to collect 100 Coins in is Episode 5. This way you have Yoshi to help you.
Secret Shine #1
After clearing Episode 5, return to the level and the obstacle course. Hit the red button and collect all 8 red coins.
Secret Shine #2
In Episode 8 use the rocket pack to get yourself to the top of the big tree in the center. There's a red coin at the top of this tree. Look at the sun and shoot water at it.

Corona Mountain
Final Boss
This is one of those last levels of a game where getting there is more than half the battle. First, you have to get to Bowser. The boat in the lava may cause you some trouble. Just take it slow. Then, when it comes to the clouds, just concentrate and take your time. I fell into the lava several times :/.

Beating Bowser is fairly easy, once you know what to do. There are five "points" to the bowl that Bowswer is sitting in. Go out to each point, use your Rocket Nozzle, then do a ground pound. You'll see the red "re-entry" glow on Mario's butt. Just run around the rim and pound the five prongs, it's that easy.
