Gun Valkyrie Review
Thumbs Up from Jer Thumbs Up from Ali
In Gun Valkyrie, you play as one of two jet-pack-wearing, heavy-armament-toting, cyber-historical bad asses whose job it is to shoot lots and lots of alien spiders, spawning pods, dragonflies, and electrical shockers. Sounds a little weird, doesn't it? Well, let me explain. This game is set in the 1900s, an alternative 1900s where technology and science allow for energy guns and jet packs. Of course, if you didn't bother to read the story line, you'd never have guessed this, so you may as well think of it as a futuristic, shoot-em-up, sci-fi adventure.

Having that out of the way, lets talk about the gameplay, because you all know I'm not a big fan of story lines. This game is a solid 3rd person platformer which progresses in a linear fashion through 10 missions. The missions fall into 3 basic categories: (1) Get through a stage (2) Shoot everything in a stage and (3) Kill a boss. This is par for the course and there's no doubt that you've played similar games before. However, where Gun Valkyrie excels is the range of movement you have because of the jet pack. The jet pack allows you to sprint forward, fly to various cliffs/stone towers, hover, and do acrobatics all while shooting your enemies to smitherines. The ability to fly and shoot at the same time opens up this game to a combination of puzzles and action. You have to figure out how to get from one stone tower to the next, find various doors and search out hidden enemies. This can be quite entertaining and, in my opinion, is more fun than 3rd person platformers where you're stuck to running around (Onimusha, I'm looking in your direction).

All of this movement and flying would get pretty confusing if the controls were not set up as well as they are. The left trigger fires your jet pack. The right trigger fires your gun. The left analog stick moves you, and the right analog stick aims your gun/looks around. Each button is assigned a weapon, so switching back and forth is a breeze. There is a good map, which you access with the white button. The controls have a pretty steep learning curve but become fairly natural within an hour or so of gameplay, but I'll warn you now, you'll definitely get some carpal-tunnel from playing this game.

The graphics are excellent. Both indoor and outdoor worlds are strikingly detailed and offer the gamer much to explore and get lost in. I'd say the look and feel is a bit HALOesque.

As a final thought, this game takes some getting used to. I didn't find it fun until about the 3rd level, after many hours of playing. Same with Allison. At first, she didn't like it all. Now, we can't put it down. Especially after spending 3 days of our time trying to get past one level. Finally a challenging game that I actually like.

Halley Core Locations
In order to get Kelly's Gearskin to Level 2, you must defeat Nidhogg. In order to get her Gearskin to Level 3, you must find all of the Halley Cores.
Level Location
VALLEY 1 At the second set of mushroom platforms, on the highest thin platform.
VALLEY 2 In the floating platform area with the drafts. Slightly right of the north exit, on the higher level.
VALLEY 3 At the very end of the stage. Be sure to leave a Frekiheim alive before you grab the core or the stage will end.
CIVILIAN BASE 1 In the third large room. About 2/3rds the way up on the NE portion you'll find a nook. Drop down from there.
CIVILIAN BASE 2 In the narrow, "elevator" shaft. Boost up one level, then fall off to the side. Go to any corner and drop down one level.
CIVILIAN BASE 3 Fall far down, until you see the five SVN drones that form a star pattern. You should see a door on the same level. The core is below the platform on the other side of that door.
NAGLFAR'S PIT 1 Right below the starting.
NAGLFAR'S PIT 2 Very bottom, center of the pit.
YGGDRASILL 1 Alongside the wall 2/3 the way down. Should be visible as you descend.
YGGDRASILL 2 Alongside the wall 2/3 the way up. Should be visible as you ascend.
FAQs/Sticking Points
VALLEY 2: How do I get back up to the upper half of the map?
There are two ways to do this: (1) You can get over the cliff walls with a little expertise if you fire your jet pack in pulses towards the cliff top once you get enough height. (2) The easier way is to find the cave at the bottom of the map (marked as a blue square on the map). The cave is on the valley floor, so no flying is necessary to get there. The whole level is a big circle, so the cave links around to the top of the map and then you can work your way back down.
NAGLFAR'S PIT 1: How do I get up to the top of this damn place?
There are many ways to get to the top. Here's a few tips: Work your way around until you see three platforms that are close together and look like steps. Keep going higher. Eventually you'll reach a platform where all you can do is fly towards the green wall. Do it. Land on the platforms near the green wall, and work your way up to the green wall. From the upper part of the green wall, you can either jump to a platform and work your way up from there or work your way around from green wall to green wall. I also recommend that you use Saburouta, not Kelly. Kelly's dumb.
How do I beat the first boss, Daihelm?
Keep aiming up at him and wait for your cursor to turn red. Shoot his underside with the drive gun. Dodge his attacks, but try to focus on him. Once his health is at 50%, he will attack from the ground. When he starts whirling around, jump as high as possible, aim down, and shoot him right in the center of his "head" from above. You'll have to do this several times.
